Understanding the Stages of Child Development

Stages-of-Child-Development

As a parent, you need to understand and recognize your child’s development stages and what to watch for. Your pediatrician is an expert on child development. The pediatricians at Premier Pediatrics offer comprehensive pediatric services, including monitoring your child’s development. They have two convenient office locations in Brighton and Commerce City, CO.

The Stages of Childhood Development

As your child grows and develops, you can look for some important milestones. Consider:

At 1 to 3 months, your baby should be:

  • Smiling, both to themselves and to you
  • Raising their head and chest when lying on their stomach
  • Tracking movement with their eyes
  • Bringing their hands to their mouth
  • Gripping and reaching for things

At 4 to 6 months, your baby should be:

  • Rolling over
  • Babbling and laughing
  • Sitting up while supported
  • Having better head control
  • Beginning to crawl

At 7 to 9 months, your baby should be:

  • Sitting up without support
  • Responding to familiar words
  • Clapping and playing simple games like peekaboo and patty-cake
  • Pulling up to a standing position

At 10 to 12 months, your baby should be:

  • Beginning to feed without your help
  • Moving around while holding onto furniture
  • Speaking one or two words
  • Pointing at things to get your attention
  • Pretend playing by copying what you do
  • Taking their first steps

These are general guidelines. Some children may be slower or faster at achieving developmental milestones. Your pediatrician will perform routine developmental assessments when your child is 9, 18, and 30 months old.
